Emergency Escape Smoke Hoods
Emergency Escape Smoke Hoods are designed to facilitate escape from burning structures eg buildings ,Vessels or Offshore platforms. They are not “rescue devices” and are designed for one off short duration use (see specific manufacturers instructions) whilst escaping the hazardous environment. Smoke Hoods are designed to be pulled over the head and should not interfere with spectacles. If fitted correctly it protects the users’ head from heat and thermal radiation, the eyes from the harmful irritant gases produced by fire and, through the use of a filtration system, can provide filtered air relatively free of harmful narcotic (for example Carbon Monoxide (CO)) gases. They are a one off product and if you need to train users or demonstrate emercency escape smoke hoods , training versions are available. Resealing a product could result in a user succumbing to the harmful gases. The two types of Emergency Escape Smoke hood offered by Resmar Ltd, the Draeger Parat C and the MSA S-Cap are designed to provide 15 minutes maximum duration against the gases and vapours typically found in fire incidents. They are both tested to EN403.
Smoke hoods have application in a variety of different fire environments ranging from high-rise office buildings ,ships, offshore production platforms to domestic dwellings. Because some smoke hoods can easily be carried in briefcases or handbags, they can also be used in hotel, public transport (overland rail and underground light rail).

Some tips on selecting emergency escape smoke hoods :
1) Offer protection from the main lethal fire gases, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Cyanide, Hydrogen Chloride, etc.
2) Offer at least 15 minutes of protection from high concentrations of these lethal fire gases.
3) Be tested to an appropriate national standard such as the European Standard EN 403.
4) Provide a good neck seal to keep out lethal gases and particulate matter.
5) Allow good visibility when donned as you will need to be able to see as much as possible.
6) Be made of a heat resistant material to offer protection from elevated temperature and completely cover the user’s head.
7) Be easy to put on quickly and have clear instructions for proper use.
9) Be highly visible and accessible in event of a fire
10) If you intend deploying several emergency escape smoke hoods and you operate in a hazardous environment it is worth investing in the Training device and updating your employees regularly.
