Filter masks for increased protection against swine flu

This page is not intended as a source of information on the symptoms and effects of exposure to the flu virus in whatever form it takes eg Swine flu.  Any of the NHS sites  will provide excellent information on this topic. This page is designed to provide information on how to minimise exposure to the airborne droplets which can spread flu. The old adage; “coughs and sneezes spread diseases” is very true and everday we are exposed to a multitude of airborne virus’s most of which our bodys’ defense  mechanisms  deal with .  In the case of swine flu, some simple steps can help to minimise the risk :

·         If you develop the symptoms, stay at home dont spread the virus to your colleagues

·         Use a tissue to capture your sneezes and dispose of immediately

·         Wash your hands regularly and or use a sanitising hand gel

·         If working in a crowded area , wearing a  respirator* is a sensible precaution

*A respirator is recommended rather than a "surgical mask" as this offers greater protection to the wearer, provided it is used and fitted correctly.

EN149 2001 has 3 categories of protection ,FFP3 is recommended for airborne droplets.
